I am interested in the molecular mechanisms that regulate synaptic transmission, and the relationship between changes in neurotransmitter release and neuropsychiatric illnesses such as depression and Parkinson’s disease. My laboratory focuses on the function of neurotransmitter transporters, the proteins responsible for transporting neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin across biological membranes. Using a variety of molecular and genetic techniques, we study how neurotransmitter transport is regulated in cultured cells and in the model organism Drosophila, and how changes in transporter function and synaptic transmission may influence behavior and neurodegenerative processes relevant to Parkinson’s disease.
