Personal Statement:
Dr. Mark Sklansky, M.D., is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Co-Director of the Fetal Cardiology Program at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.
He received his B.A. degree in biomedical ethics from Brown University in 1984, and his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine in 1987. Following pediatric internship and residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, he completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He served as an Associate Editor of Pediatric Cardiology for 5 years, and currently serves as Chair of the Fetal Echocardiography Community of Practice of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
The focus of his clinical and academic interests has been fetal cardiology, with a particular interest in improving early detection of major forms of congenital heart disease. More generally, his academic interests have included fetal and pediatric cardiology, three-dimensional fetal echocardiography, biomedical ethics, and veterinary cardiology. His veterinary interests have focused on the echocardiographic evaluation of marine mammals using fetal and transesophageal echocardiography. He is particularly interested in using echocardiography to understand differences between human, marine mammalian and reptilian cardiovascular development and morphology.
